My start was humble. My first client was a pharma company and I landed it by accident.
One of the top CFO services firms I was in contact with, didn't want to deal with them as the CEO was cheap...
So I found myself working as their part-time CFO for 60% of the normal tariff. I desperately needed my first client and I was willing to work at cost.
I realized that I need more clients if I wanted to survive, so I've decided to approach anyone I knew.
I talked with friends and colleagues. I met with VCs and legal firms, anyone who serves or has some connection to my potential clients.
My business grew steadily over the years through word of mouth and referrals.
But this approach led me close to bankruptcy twice in the last 10 years. I had to fire employees, move out of offices, and start almost from scratch where I'm the only employee of my firm.
I learned that I can't trust this process as I can't control it. I wanted to land new clients more often and I didn't know how to.
I needed to do something, so I tried cold outreach. Over the next 24 months, I emailed thousands of CEOs. I pitched my services and how I can contribute to their business. I tried LinkedIn and email outreach, but
It was a failure.
The conversion rate was below my expectations. 90% of them ignored me, 9.9% asked me not to bother them. The rest 0.1% asked to be in touch in the future. Very few became clients over the years.
Then I moved to paid ads, I tried Facebook ads, Linkedin ads, Google...nothing converted.
Something was wrong and I started to question my ability to sustain my business.
